History of the Balar Malar Reading Challenge – Book Projects
The Balar Malar Reading Challenge – Book Projects initiative was created to encourage students to develop reading, writing, creativity, and Tamil literacy skills through collaborative book creation projects.
Phase 1 – Initial Pilot
The first phase was launched by the Balar Malar Newcastle team, where 13 books were successfully completed and published.
This phase was supported by:
* NSW Department of Education (NSW DoE)
* NSW Community Languages Schools (NSW CLS)
* Lake Macquarie City Council
* Balar Malar Tamil Educational Association Inc.
Phase 2 – Expansion Across Schools
Following the success of the pilot project, the second phase expanded across multiple Balar Malar schools. During this phase:
* 123 books were completed and published
* Students from various branches participated in collaborative authoring projects
* A grand Book Release Function was organised with support from the NSW Multicultural Festivals Grant program
This phase was supported by:
* NSW Department of Education (NSW DoE)
* NSW Community Languages Schools (NSW CLS)
Ongoing School-Based Initiatives
In addition to the major project phases, various books continue to be released through school-based reading challenges, young author programs, and collaborative literary initiatives conducted by Balar Malar school teams across different branches.
